Today, ChatGPT isn't just a digital assistant: it's an everyday presence in the lives of millions of users. And understanding how and why people use it helps us understand where the relationship between humans and technology is heading.
When ChatGPT was released, its use was mostly experimental. People would ask him for jokes, recipes or poems. But, over time, the experiment became a habit.
The NBER report reveals that by mid-2025, more than 2.6 billion messages were being sent daily through the platform, a growth of more than 500% in a single year.
In the beginning, the majority of users were young men from developed countries. Today, the landscape has changed: use has been balanced between genders, and middle- and low-income countries are experiencing the fastest growth. Artificial intelligence ceased to be a technological luxury to become an accessible and global tool.
Perhaps the most interesting change doesn't have to do with how many use ChatGPT, but what they use it for. In 2024, nearly half of the messages were related to work tasks. A year later, only 27% had that purpose.
So, what do we use AI for the rest of the time?
According to Marc Zao-Sanders (2025), author of Top-100 Gen AI Use Case Report, the answer is simple: in ourselves. The most common uses of artificial intelligence in 2025 include talk therapy, personal organization, life planning, and the search for purpose.
ChatGPT has gone from being a productivity tool to becoming a wellness assistant, capable of accompanying decisions, routines and emotions. It no longer only helps to write emails, it also helps to write better days.
Although personal uses are growing, work remains a key area for AI. The NBER estimates that 40% of work messages in ChatGPT are related to writing: from reports and presentations to writing emails.
Far from replacing human tasks, AI acts as a cognitive copilot, helping to improve clarity, structure and creativity in professional communication. In the words of researchers, its true value lies in improving decision-making and reasoning, especially in jobs where knowledge and communication are essential.
The growth of ChatGPT in emerging countries reflects more than just technological adoption: it shows a new form of access to knowledge. In many places, AI is today the gateway to information, education and digital skills.
This trend is also changing digital culture. People are learning to collaborate with technology instead of just using it. Asking an AI for advice, asking her to translate an emotion or to help us organize the day has become part of a global routine.
In less than three years, ChatGPT has changed the way we work, learn and think. What began as curiosity became a new language of interaction between humans and machines.
Today it's no longer just about artificial intelligence, but about shared intelligence: a space where human creativity and technological power meet.
And if the data teaches us anything, it's that this change is just beginning.
